Photo-identification confirms that humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) from eastern Australia migrate past New Zealand but indicates low levels of interchange with breeding grounds of Oceania

چکیده
Recent photo-identification and genetic studies have identified at least five discrete breeding populations in Australia Oceania: western (D), eastern (E (i)), New Caledonia (ii)), Tonga (iii)), French Polynesia the Cook Islands (F). Also evident are low levels of intermingling among consistent with degree differentiation. Photo-identification has confirmed linkages between Area V feeding areas grounds one genotype match been reported Oceania grounds. abundance estimates show strong increases Australian population, some recovery populations, but little evidence other known or Zealand. Studies to date provided no conclusive migratory destination humpback whales passing through Zealand waters en route Antarctic tropical comparisons were undertaken whale fluke catalogues from (EA, 1315), east (OE, 513), west (OW, 166) (NZ, 13). Five matches found OE/OW, four OW/EA three NZ/EA. The data used investigate discuss ground interchange travelling waters. confirm that site fidelity migrate past including Strait Foveaux Strait.

Global diversity and oceanic divergence of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae).
Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) annually undertake the longest migrations between seasonal feeding and breeding grounds of any mammal. Despite this dispersal potential, discontinuous seasonal distributions and migratory patterns suggest that humpbacks form discrete regional populations within each ocean. To better understand the worldwide population history of humpbacks, and the interp...
متن کاملDeaths and Entanglements of Humpback Whales, Megaptera novaeangliae,
Reports of humpback whales, Megaptera novaeangliae, that either died or were entangled in Hawaiian waters from 1972 through October 1996 were analyzed to determine age class (estimated from body length and/or notes), location, annual frequency, and seasonal distribution of occurrence. Using reports collected from the National Marine Fisheries Service Pacific Area Office and published news repor...
متن کاملSource levels of social sounds in migrating humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae).
The source level of an animal sound is important in communication, since it affects the distance over which the sound is audible. Several measurements of source levels of whale sounds have been reported, but the accuracy of many is limited because the distance to the source and the acoustic transmission loss were estimated rather than measured. This paper presents measurements of source levels ...
متن کاملHUMPBACK WHALE ( Megaptera novaeangliae ) : Eastern North Pacific Stock
STOCK DEFINITION AND GEOGRAPHIC RANGE Although the International Whaling Commission (IWC) only considered one stock (Donovan 1991), there is now good evidence for multiple populations of humpback whales in the North Pacific (Johnson and Wolman 1984; Baker et al. 1990). Aerial, vessel, and photo-identification surveys, and genetic analyses indicate that within the U.S. EEZ, there are at least th...

These six regions represent relatively discrete subpopulations, fidelity to which is determined matrilineally (Clapham and Mayo 1987). Recent genetic analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) has indicated that this fidelity has persisted over an evolutionary timescale in at least the Icelandic and Norwegian feeding grounds (Palsbøll et al. 1995, Larsen et al. 1996). Genetic partitioning is not evi...
